A Better Future Starts with Movement
Sun City Anthem has always prided itself on being a haven for active adults who value health, wellness, and community. But in recent years, our fitness programs, once the heartbeat of a vibrant lifestyle, have seen a steep decline in participation. Challenges like COVID-19 restrictions and unnecessary policy changes, including the removal of such loved owner benefits as $45 card for 45 classes and $30 card for 30 days of unlimited classes, and have driven many residents to seek alternatives elsewhere.
These challenges demand bold solutions, and I, Nona Tobin, am here to present a vision for revitalizing our fitness program to better meet the needs of every resident.
I make these proposals to try to encourage the other candidates and sitting board members to alter their perspective from seeing community fitness as just a cost center that the board must keep under control and begin to see what value health and wellness programs add to the quality of life in SCA. By expanding fitness offerings and making them more accessible, inclusive, and impactful, we can ensure every community member enjoys a longer, healthier, and more connected life.
Here’s my roadmap for transforming Sun City Anthem’s fitness program into a model that supports wellness and celebrates community.
1. Partnering with SilverSneakers(TM) for Affordable and Accessible Fitness
Many of us are familiar with SilverSneakers, a nationally recognized senior fitness program funded through participating Medicare plans. Here’s the exciting part: SilverSneakers offers $3 per class for participating seniors, up to $30 a month, allowing us to fund free group exercise classes for eligible residents at no extra cost and resources to cover younger or uninsured residents’ access to free classes.
Becoming a SilverSneakers affiliate would reinstate free group classes for many residents while opening doors for others to access affordable fitness options. This isn’t just a smart financial move; it’s a way to bring our community together, powering connection through shared activity.
2. Reintroducing the Unlimited Class Pass
Removing the unlimited class pass created unnecessary barriers for residents committed to their fitness journeys. By reintroducing this option, we can rekindle the spirit of active participation and make it easier for everyone to access as many classes as they need. Combined with the SilverSneakers partnership, this approach would make participation seamless, inclusive, and engaging for all.
3. Establishing a Resident-Led Fitness Committee
Who knows our fitness needs better than us? By chartering a resident-driven fitness committee, we can empower our community to shape the programs and classes we offer. This committee would collaborate with our Fitness Department staff to address the unique needs of our residents.
Together, we can focus on initiating special programs that tackle injury prevention, improve strength, and delay the progression of degenerative diseases. These are not just fitness goals but vital steps toward ensuring most of our aging population can stay active as long as possible.
4. Targeting Real, Age-Specific Goals
The fitness needs of seniors extend beyond general exercise. Classes and personal training should focus on meaningful health goals, such as managing osteoarthritis, building muscle strength, reducing the risk of falls, and preventing joint replacement surgeries.
By centering our program around these practical, impactful fitness outcomes, we can directly improve the quality of life for all residents while setting the standard for active aging.
A Vision of Community Wellness
Imagine our gym bustling with the energy of friends and neighbors. Picture classes filled with laughter, encouragement, and connection. Our fitness program isn’t just about exercise; it’s about creating a thriving, supportive, and engaging community.
I believe that other local empowering senior communities, like Sun City Summerlin and McDonald Ranch, already offer unlimited free group exercise classes. Sun City Anthem deserves a board that takes the same innovative approach to fitness. Our board must match, if not exceed, these offerings to keep our residents happy, healthy, and proud of their community.
Join Me in Building a Healthier Sun City Anthem
The time is now to come together and make fitness a top priority for our community. This revitalization plan isn’t just about individual fitness; it’s about investing in our collective future. It’s about creating an environment where the HOA supports all residents to thrive, no matter their age or ability.
I’m Nona Tobin, and I want to make this vision a reality. Together, we can build a fitness program that reflects our community’s vibrant spirit and commitment to healthy aging.
If you’re ready to bring wellness back to the forefront of Sun City Anthem, I ask for your trust and your vote. Together, we can make Sun City Anthem a model for healthy living and community engagement.
